Is walking enough exercise, or do I need a gym?

By Cellibrate Health · · Updated

Short answer

For most people starting out, daily walking is the best possible exercise: free, low-risk, and something you will actually keep doing. Add strength work a couple of times a week as you build the habit, but never let "I don't have a gym" stop you from moving today.

The gym question stops more people than any other. They believe that if they cannot do the "real" workout, there is no point in doing anything. That belief keeps people on the couch for years.

Why walking is underrated

Walking is the movement your body was built for. It is gentle on joints, it can be done anywhere, it needs no equipment, and it fits into a life that already has a job and a family in it. People who walk daily for years tend to keep walking. People who buy an intense program in January tend to quit by March. The best exercise is the one you keep doing.

How to make it count

  • After meals. A ten- or fifteen-minute walk after eating is one of the easiest habits to keep and it works with your body's natural rhythm.
  • Brisk enough to notice. You should be able to talk, but not sing.
  • Outside when possible. Daylight, fresh air, and a change of scene do more for stress than a treadmill facing a wall.

When to add strength

Once walking is automatic, add strength work twice a week. You do not need a gym for that either. Bodyweight movements, a couple of dumbbells, or resistance bands at home cover what most people need. Strength protects your independence as you age; it is the difference between carrying your own groceries at seventy and not.

The honest answer

If you never set foot in a gym but walk every day and do some strength work at home, you are ahead of most of the population. If you love the gym, go. But do not wait for a gym to start moving. Start today, on your own street.
